The National Program of Action for Children is a United Nations programme focussing on children and creating a “World fit for children”. Every government department is to play a meaningful role in ensuring that this programme has positive spin-offs for children and that children understand the role and impact of the government. The Energy Focus Week for learners is such an initiative of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME). The DME has chosen to focus on Education, Safety, Health and Equity. As part of their programme, the DME has decided to set aside two weeks per year, one for the Energy Focus Week and the other for the Mining Focus Week. With the recent power cuts in the Western Cape, it is particularly fitting that the Energy Focus Week for the coastal provinces this year will be hosted in the Western Cape, at the Ritz Hotel from 3 – 7 April 2006. Five of our schools have been invited to this event and 20 learners and 5 teachers will represent the WCED. The learners will be informed about careers in the energy sector and educated on health and safety issues through presentations, exhibitions, promotional materials and excursions to oil companies. The last evening will be dedicated to an Awards Dinner for the children, where the Minister will be awarding those learners who have been innovative in manufacturing or producing things during this conference that can enhance energy production.
