1. The new national curriculum encourages learners to use multiple sources of information, including contemporary news. This minute is to draw the attention of schools to a privately run general knowledge quiz.
2. The World Knowledge Olympiad will be taking place on 16 May 2006. The aim of the Olympiad is to test the general knowledge of primary and high school learners from Grade 6 to Grade 12 and encourage them to expand their knowledge. Approximately one third of the questions are from the mainstream newspapers.
3. There is an entry fee of R15 each for up to 15 learners, and of R10 each for 16 and more learners. The closing date is 14 April 2006. Entry forms are available from WORLD KNOWLEDGE OLYMPIAD, P.O. Box 13484, NOORDSTAD, 9302 or e-mail: nico@bigfivegame.co.za. There are prizes increasing in value per grade for first, second and third place. The prizes range from R1 400 to R2 600.
