1. As part of the WCED MST Strategy, Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase MST kits were delivered to all primary schools in 2004 and 2005. To enhance the consolidation of basic concepts in Mathematics, Mental Mathematics Flipbooks for Grades 1 - 6 were also supplied to schools.
2. The WCED requests principals and school management teams to encourage teachers to make full use of this material to aid the implementation of outcomes-based education and promote active learning.
3. Please note that the Mental Mathematics Flipbooks do not replace the Mathematics learning programme. The 10-minutes-a-day Mental Mathematics is intended to extend the Mathematics learning programme and to consolidate concepts learned in the previous year. It will also assist teachers to get learners to think more abstractly.
4. To ascertain the effectiveness and usefulness of the Mental Mathematics Flipbooks, the WCED requests that Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase heads of department consult with the relevant teachers at their schools and then complete the attached questionnaire. Please complete the questionnaire per phase, giving the most common response from teachers.
