1. The introduction of a new curriculum is a major challenge, but it is also a great opportunity to reflect on one’s practice and to take ownership of the process. The orientation courses for Grade 8 and 9 teachers in July and September 2006 present another opportunity to improve the quality of education, by focusing on assessment, planning and classroom practices and requirements.
2. As indicated in Circular 0066/2005, the National Curriculum Statement Grades R to 9 (Schools) Policy will be introduced in Grades 8 and 9 in 2007.
3. Two orientation courses will be presented for each learning area, one in July and another in September.
3.1 A 5-day orientation course in each of the eight learning areas will be held for all Grade 8 and 9 teachers in their main learning area from 10 to 14 July 2006.
3.2 A 4-day course in each of the eight learning areas will be offered for those teachers who teach a second learning area from 26 to 29 September 2006.
3.2.1 The 4-day course will be a repetition of the July course, without a repeat of Day 1.
3.2.2 This course will enable teachers who teach more than one learning area to attend a course in their second specialisation.
4. Principals are requested to register all their Grade 8 and 9 teachers for training in July, and September where necessary, by no later than 24 February 2006 by completing the attached form and faxing or e-mailing it to their EMDC. When e-mailing, principals are requested to use the following in the subject line: Annexure A: Gr. 8 & 9.
5. Principals must please note that teachers appointed by the school governing bodies are welcome to attend the training courses, but cannot claim any transport expenses.
6. Teachers may not withdraw from the July course, as the school will be liable for the full cost incurred where teachers who have registered do not attend.
7. Principals will be informed of the venues for the courses before the end of the first term.
8. Your cooperation in this regard will be highly appreciated.
