1. The implementation of a new curriculum is never an easy process. Teachers have to develop an understanding of the pace, the demands and the content of the curriculum, a process that is of a developmental nature which can only happen in the course of teaching a subject(s).
2. Learners who repeat Grade 11 in 2007 will study the FET NCS and will therefore switch from the Report 550 curriculum to the NCS. This will mean that they must offer the four fundamental subjects of which Life Orientation and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy are new requirements for the National Senior Certificate (NSC). They may also have to offer other new subjects.
3. In an effort to support such learners, 26 subject guidelines have been developed to provide guidance to teachers to manage the process.
4. The subject guidelines show the learning outcomes in Grade 10, as well as the prior knowledge and skills that are required to proceed with the NCS in Grade 11. Grade 11 repeaters will have to master this knowledge and address these skill gaps.
5. In addition, the subject guideline also indicates the overlap, if any, of the Report 550 subject with the NCS subject. This information will support teachers to identify subject content knowledge and skill gaps and affirm the knowledge that learners who repeat Grade 11 should have.
6. Further guidance is provided by recommending appropriate teaching strategies for each learning outcome, as well a recommended time frame or number of periods required.
7. It is recommended that teachers align these subject guidelines to the 2007 Grade 11 pace setters that will be distributed to schools shortly.
8. Teachers who have further queries regarding support for learners who repeat Grade 11 in 2007, should contact the relevant Curriculum Advisors at EMDC offices.
9. Principals are requested to ensure that each subject teacher receives a copy of the guideline this will be distributed to schools and to monitor the implementation thereof very carefully.
