The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) believes that Grade R tuition programmes of a good quality are essential for improving levels of literacy and numeracy.

The Directorate: Curriculum Development is, therefore, pleased to be able to offer an exemplar of a work schedule to all Grade R teachers. While this exemplar is not prescribed for use by all Grade R teachers, it does illustrate how all the learning outcomes and assessment standards of Grade R can be dealt with in a carefully-planned teaching programme.

This exemplar reflects one school's particular context. It must, therefore, be used flexibly and adapted to fit the unique circumstances of each school, without compromising the requirements of the curriculum, including formal assessment.

All schools with Grade R classes registered with the WCED will receive an English version of this exemplar.

| 5.1 |
Schools may place an order, at no cost, for either one additional Afrikaans or Xhosa version, and/or one CD containing all 3 language versions in Word format, by completing Section A on the attached order form and submitting it to Edumedia by 26 January 2007.

Schools wishing to obtain additional copies, over and above the free copies mentioned in 5.1, will have to purchase these. Section B on the attached order form indicates the amount that schools will have to pay if additional copies are ordered.

The English version of the exemplar will be posted this year on the website of the Directorate: Curriculum Development at http://curriculum.wcape.school.za The Afrikaans and Xhosa versions will be posted on the website in the new year.

Foundation Phase curriculum advisers in the EMDCs will provide guidance on the use of this work schedule to Grade R teachers and principals during the course of 2007. Should teachers require assistance with their planning and implementation, one of the the following curriculum advisers should be contacted:
