The Department of Education, in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the Department of Local Government and Housing, the Department of Social Services and Municipalities, has embarked on a campaign to enable learners of 16 years and older to apply for a green bar-coded identity document (ID). |
2. |
This concept was successfully piloted at certain schools during 2004 and will be extended to all schools in the province during 2005. The importance of being in possession of an ID cannot be overemphasised. It is an enabling document and a certificate of citizenship that will also enable learners to register as voters. |
3. |
Benefactors supporting this campaign are committed to providing resources and funding, which may result in the documents being provided at a minimal cost or even free of cost. Learners must therefore be encouraged to make optimal use of this once-off opportunity. |
4. |
The local office of the IEC has been mandated to contact principals in order to obtain the information required regarding the logistics of rolling-out the campaign at their schools. Schools will be contacted during the first quarter of 2005. |
5. |
The co-operation of the principals and the educators involved in this extremely important exercise will be highly appreciated. Please bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all concerned. |
