1. In December 2004 the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) received the results of the language and mathematics tests set by the University of New South Wales Education Assessment Centre and written in 2004 by all Grade 8 learners.
2. In January 2005 each school will receive a package containing details of the results of the tests and certificates for each learner who participated in the tests. Principals must please refer to the attached page for a list of the contents of the package that they will receive.
3. Principals are encouraged to share the results of the tests with all teachers as well as with the school governing body and interested parents.
4. The reports provide an excellent tool for assessing schools’ strengths and weaknesses in the teaching of language and mathematics. Analysis of the results should therefore inform school improvement plans and the planning of work schedules.
5. As EMDC officials have been trained to interpret the results, schools must contact their EMDC's if they require assistance in this regard.
6. Similar tests will be conducted in 2005. The mathematics test will be written on Thursday 2 June 2005 from 09:00 to 11:00 and the language test on Wednesday 15 June 2005 from 09:00 to 11:00.
7. The Examination Directorate of the WCED will request registration of Grade 8 learners during the first term of 2005.
8. Your co-operation in this important matter will be appreciated.
