1. The Geography Department of the University of the Western Cape will be conducting a course on Geographical Information Systems (GISs) to enhance the skills of Geography educators in the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).
2. The course will take place on 26 and 27 September 2005 and will concentrate on the use of GIS software in the Geography classroom.
3. This joint venture between the Geography Department of the University of the Western Cape and the WCED will be the first of a series of quarterly vacation courses for Geography educators who wish to enhance their teaching skills for the new FET curriculum.
4. During the July 2005 orientation sessions, several educators indicated an interest in attending such a course. A list of these educators is attached as Annexure A. However, any Geography educator in the WCED may apply to attend, although, owing to limited facilities, the course will be restricted to only 80 educators.
5. The two-day course will be held in the Mathematics Computer Laboratory of the University of the Western Cape and will commence daily, on both 26 and 27 September 2005, at 08:30 and end at 16:30.
6. Educators who wish to attend will have to fund their own transport and accommodation costs. The course fee is R50, 00.
7. Any FET Geography educator who wishes to attend must inform Mr Andrew Isaacs (Senior Curriculum Planner: Geography) by fax (021-467 2258) or e-mail (anisaacs@pgwc.gov.za) by 14:00 on Wednesday, 21 September 2005.
