1. ADDRESS BY INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION LEADER - 25 AUGUST 2005

Principals in the Metropole EMDCs are cordially invited by the University of the Western Cape to attend their second annual Julius Nyerere Lecture on 25 August at 16h30 at the UWC Library Auditorium.

1.1 The guest speaker will be Dr Rosa María Torres of Ecuador. Over the past twenty years she has lived, studied and/or worked in five countries - Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, the United States and Argentina - and has conducted technical missions in most Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as in many African and Asian countries. She was senior education adviser at the UNICEF Education Cluster in New York 1992-1996; programme director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the WK Kellogg Foundation, based in Buenos Aires 1996-1998; and researcher at IIEP-UNESCO Buenos Aires 1998-2000. Since 2000 she has been a researcher and international education adviser, working from her own institute, Instituto Fronesis. The author of over 15 books and numerous articles, she wrote a weekly column on education in El Comercio in Quito between 1990 and 1998.

2. SEMINAR FOR RURAL PRINCIPALS - 23 AUGUST 2005
2.1 On Tuesday, 23 August, Dr Rosa María Torres see above will address a special meeting of rural principals at Hoërskool Overberg in Caledon. As her specialisation is in developing communities and supporting lifelong learning, her topic will be "How your school can contribute to making this a learning province".
2.2 Professor Shirley Walters, Chair of the Learning Cape Festival and head of the Division for Lifelong Learning at UWC, will give a presentation and lead the discussion.
2.3 Minister Cameron Dugmore, Mr Ron Swartz and members of the WCED EMDC and Head Office management structures will also attend this session, which should be of enormous value to the rural communities and to the whole province. It is the first of its kind and schools are urged to attend so that this event can serve as a real turning point for rural planning.
2.4 There is limited money available to cover travel costs - as this is a special project, travel costs will be covered at a rate of only R0.90 per kilometre. Principals are urged to share transport and to indicate clearly in advance if they are going to claim. T
2.5 he meeting starts with a light lunch, available from 12:00. The proceedings will start at 13:00 and should be over by 16:30.

  • Displays showcasing ABET; Early Childhood Development; sectoral education and training authorities; small, medium and micro enterprises; chambers of commerce; industry; non-governmental organisations, and community-based organisations e.g. RED Door

  • Open days at local FET Colleges

3.5 FET College Open Days: Check with your local colleges. They will be dropping leaflets at schools and advertising in community newspapers.
