1. The national Department of Education currently manages the external assessment of Senior Certificate candidates in Accounting, English Second (Additional) Language, Biology, Physical Science, History and Mathematics. To promote consistency in syllabus covered and learner assessment, the Department of Education, in consultation with provincial education departments, has developed guideline documents for teachers in each of these six subjects, which clearly outline the syllabuses and provide the format and structure of the examination question papers.
2. Although much progress has been made with promoting consistency in assessment standards across the provinces, it has been noticed at marking centres that some teachers of Accounting and History would benefit if, in addition to guideline documents, they were to be provided with certain information to clarify certain matters regarding syllabus and assessment so as to enable them to better prepare their candidates for Senior Certificate Examinations. The examiners, moderators and markers involved in History and Accounting have, therefore, drafted supplementary notes to assist teachers in this regard.
3. It is important that teachers of Accounting and History to Grade 12 learners familiarize themselves with the attached supplementary notes for Accounting and History as they are aimed at fostering consistent assessment practices across all schools in these two subjects.
