1. EMDCs are hereby provided with an analysis of the results per question paper per subject obtained in a specific EMDC region in the Western Cape Province in the 2004 Senior Certificate examination.
2. During the marking process in December, the marks obtained by each candidate in each question in each question paper were captured in order to enable the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to provide each school with an analysis, and to identify possible errors, such as when candidates answer too many questions or an incorrect combination of questions. These statistics will be utilised by examining panels to assess the quality and appropriateness of each of the questions and the general standard of the question papers.
3. Although the information provided is confidential, chief curriculum advisers (CCAs) must share the relevant statistics with the curriculum advisers (CAs) for each subject. The statistics indicate the average for the EMDC and the province for each question in each question paper for each subject, as well as the provincial average for the question paper as a whole. A copy of the information sent to each school in an EMDC is also included.
4. CAs must be requested to study the statistics and identify areas of the syllabus that were not answered well by candidates in their EMDCs. The findings must then be discussed with the educators involved and schools that require in-service training on certain aspects of the syllabus must be identified. CAs can also use the information to identify educators at schools where candidates performed exceptionally well in the same sections and request them to offer the training.
5. CAs must also be requested to report briefly in writing on how they will address the identified difficulties, and to indicate whether support is needed. CCAs are requested to submit one report per subject where the EMDC has a CA, to the Director: Curriculum Development before the end of the first term of 2005.
5. The WCED is confident that the provision of these statistics will assist CAs to improve the quality of education in each subject in their EMDCs by identifying specific weak areas and advising teachers as to the remedial action to be taken.
