1. A MONTH-LONG FESTIVAL OF LEARNING EVENTS

August is the month of the Learning Cape Festival, and the WCED, in partnership with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, has arranged some events for this period, including the Careers Expo from 2 to 4 August. A further circular minute will be sent out shortly with details of the programme for the rest of the month.

2. SEMINAR FOR SCHOOL LEADERS ON MANAGING DIVERSITY - AUGUST 3
2.1 The target audience is school principals or members of the school management team (SMT). Professor Salim Vally of the Centre for Education Policy Development at the University of the Witwatersand will open the session by tabling some key concerns about issues in schools such as racism and other thorny matters. WCED specialists in the field, supported by representatives from the Human Rights’ Commission, will present some of the practical measures that schools have been using. The floor will also be open for schools to table their concerns and/or share practical solutions.
2.2 The session will run from 14:00 - 16:00 in the Roof Terrace at the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC). Seating is limited so schools wishing to attend are asked to reply as soon as possible to Anne Schlebusch at (021) 467 2629 (leave a full message on the answering machine) or fax (021) 467 2620 or e-mail at aschlebusch@pgwc.gov.za
3. Schools are asked to encourage learners and parents to attend the Learning and Careers Expo. It will be open from 09:00 each morning and will close at 19:00 on August 2 and 3 and at 17:00 on August 4. (See Circular Minute DCD/0047/2005 for details of the Careers Expo and arrangements for attendance.)
  1. Amongst those attending learner-focused seminars at the CTICC will be certain representatives of representative councils of learners (RCLs) - nominated on a cluster basis - and HIV and AIDS peer educators. The schools concerned will be contacted by the relevant managers of these projects.

4. Iziko Museums are arranging special festival school tours and lessons at the Slave Lodge, Castle, SA Museum, Bo-Kaap Museum, SA Maritime Museum and the SA National Gallery. Booking is essential. Schools should phone Cindy Ludidi at (021) 481 3823 for information.
5. There will be notices in the press about other events. Schools are invited to visit the Learning Cape website at http://www.learningcape.org for more details.
6. School principals are asked to bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all concerned.
