1. The WCED places great importance on exposing learners to career opportunities. The above-mentioned Careers Exhibition, which is an integral part of the Learning Cape Festival, creates an ideal opportunity for this kind of exposure.
2. Schools are encouraged to use this opportunity to take Grades 9, 11 and 12 learners to the exhibition so that they may be familiarised with a host of careers in a variety of fields and become acquainted with the relevant study options at various tertiary institutions. Life Orientation and Career Guidance teachers will have an opportunity to network with all exhibitors for future reference.
3. To make this opportunity a valuable learning experience, Grade 9 learners are encouraged to bring with them a print-out of their PACE interest questionnaire graph and to use it as a guide when exploring their career and subject choices. Their findings could serve as a starting point for further exploration and discussions in the classroom.
4. Grades 11 and 12 learners should complete the quiz form that will be handed out to them on arrival at the exhibition hall. The aim of this quiz is to encourage and assist learners to explore the exhibition in a focused and purposeful way. This opportunity could not only confirm a learner’s career choice, but could also create interest and direction among learners who are undecided about their futures.
5. Principals are requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of their Life Orientation and Career Guidance teachers. To facilitate the ordered arrival of schools at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, schools that wish to attend must complete the attached reply slip and mail it to the PACE Project Manager, Ms BJ Prince, at Head Office. It must reach her by 22 July 2005. Alternatively, it may be faxed to her at fax no. 021 467 2258 or e-mailed to bprince@pgwc.gov.za by that date.
