1. As Special Schools with Grade 4 to 6 classes have already received their budgets for Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM), they are hereby requested to buy Mathematics, Science and Technology kits, one of which has already been provided to each Western Cape Education Department (WCED) ordinary public school with Intermediate Phase learners, directly from the supplier.
2. The items in the kit, which are directed at the conceptual development of learners, can be used to teach towards the achievement of the learning outcomes for Mathematics, Science and Technology, with the emphasis on Technology, as well as certain learning outcomes in related learning areas. In the case of any uncertainty as to whether the learners at a particular school will benefit from these resources, principals can make an appointment with the Intermediate Phase or Technology adviser at their EMDC and browse through the contents of the kit before ordering.
3. Training in the use of the kit will be provided as follows by the service provider, Supedi Trust:
3.1 On account of limited funding, only one educator per school will be trained.
3.2 Training will be organised by the various EMDCs and will take place early in April.
3.3 There will be a training session at each of two different venues in each EMDC district.
3.4 If a school is situated a considerable distance from either of these training venues, the educator concerned will receive training from the Technology curriculum adviser on a later date.
3.5 Special schools planning to buy these kits must contact the Technology advisers at their EMDC for information about the courses as soon as possible.
4. Principals are requested to incorporate training in the use of this LTSM in their staff development plans for Intermediate Phase educators.
5. Intermediate Phase curriculum advisers at EMDCs will offer further support during the year.
6. The following must be noted in respect of the care of the kits:
6.1 The principal must ensure that all items are marked with the name of the school and entered in the inventory.
6.2 As the kit is to be shared by all educators in the Intermediate Phase, an effective system of monitoring and control will be essential.
6.3 The kit must be stored in a secure place to which teachers have easy access.
6.4 A member of the School Management Team must be put in charge of providing items to Intermediate Phase educators.
7. The attached order form must be completed and sent directly to N Steenkamp, Supedi, Fax: 011 672 8365, E-mail: I Bishop (ibishop@intekom.co.za) and not to the WCED.
8. Should principals have any queries regarding the kit and its use, they may contact the Intermediate Phase or Technology curriculum adviser at their EMDCs.
