1. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has produced athletics resource material to assist educators responsible for athletics at schools in the coaching and organising of this sport. These documents deal with the skills and knowledge of the assessment standards in the Life Orientation learning area in the GET band and in Physical Education, a subject currently in the FET band. They would also be useful in the coaching of athletics as an extra-curricular activity.
2. The following manuals, which may be reproduced by schools for coaching purposes and for teaching these skills to learners, are included in this pack:

Concentrates on basic coaching skills and techniques for 
the various athletics disciplines

Basic Athletics Administration and Technical Manual
A document to guide the novice educator-athletics 
coach in administrative and technical matters

APE Rules - Athletics Performance Evaluation Tables
Tables for use in assessing the performance 
of an athlete by using a point system
3. Coaching courses for educators are being planned by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
4. The aim is to ensure that all schools receive a set of these manuals which we hope will be instrumental in developing the skills and techniques of this popular sport among all learners in the Western Cape Province.
