1. The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Grades 10 - 12 (General) and the RNCS (GET) will be implemented incrementally during the period 2006 - 2008. As a large number of permanently employed WCED educators are under-qualified in these subjects/learning areas, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is planning to provide training to approximately 200 educators in order to upgrade their background knowledge and professional skills in this regard.
2. The ACE course will be offered as a part-time course from January 2005 to December 2006. It will lead to an NQF level 6 qualification and is a combination of distance learning and contact sessions during school holidays/weekends.
3. The WCED is offering bursaries which will cover the tuition and registration fees of the programmes. During the contact sessions educators from rural areas will be accommodated in hostels at the relevant Higher Education Institutions at the WCED’s expense.
4. Teachers are responsible for their own transport and learning support material costs.
5. A total of approximately 200 educators, aproximately 40 per subject/learning area, will be accommodated in 2005.
6. The following educators are eligible for bursaries for these courses:
  • Full-time educators in the employ of the WCED. Preference will be given to educators currently teaching the above-mentioned or related subjects/ learning areas in Grades 10 - 12 or Arts and Culture in Grades 7 - 9.

  • Educators with a two-/three-year diploma

  • Educators with a degree and a professional qualification, but with no formal qualification in the above-mentioned subjects/learning areas

7. The course will cover the following elements of the National Curriculum Statement for Further Education and Training (Grades 10 - 12) and/or the RNCS (GET):
  • The principles of the NCS/RNCS

  • The learning outcomes and assessment standards

  • The knowledge areas and assessment

  • Outcomes-based methodology (learning/teaching and assessment strategies)

  • Skills for the selection of support material, including computer software

  • What educators will require in the classroom situation

  • Writing of learning programmes

8. At the commencement of the course all participants will be expected to write a baseline/diagnostic test. This will form part of the WCED’s evaluation of the effectiveness of the course.
9. Educators who wish to apply for a bursary must complete and submit the attached application form (Legible photostat copies will be acceptable.) via their principals by no later than Friday 30 July 2004 to
