1. The UNESCO-initiated World Book Day celebration is held annually on 23 April, William Shakespeare’s date of birth, which falls on a Friday this year. The theme for the day, READING: A NON-STOP JOURNEY, reflects the importance of reading skills in life-long learning, intellectual development and psychological well-being.
2. Attached is a list of suggestions compiled by the staff of EDULIS (WCED Education Library and Information Service) for school-based activities to mark World Book Day in a rewarding and enjoyable way.
3. A colourful poster depicting the spirit of World Book Day will be made available as follows:
3.1 The SABC will distribute the poster together with an educational resources pack free of charge to all primary schools in late February 2004.
3.2 Secondary schools may collect the poster at their respective EMDCs.
4. Schools are encouraged to acknowledge the value of reading by participating enthusiastically in reading-based activities on World Book Day.
4.1 Schools may request block loans of books from the EDULIS Library well before the time for use on World Book Day.
4.2 Use should also be made of the books supplied to Foundation Phase classrooms in terms of the 100+ Books Project.
