The new national coat of arms, as the highest visual symbol of the state, was approved by cabinet in March 2000 as the official corporate identity of government. |
2. |
The Government Communication Information System (GCIS) issued the initial guidelines on the application and use of the coat of arms to all national departments in 2000. |
3. |
These guidelines were, however, not regarded as mandatory by all departments and provinces, and this resulted in variations and inconsistency in their application. |
4. |
To provide guidance on the use of the national coat of arms, cabinet approved a number of stipulations. They include the attached guidelines for the use of the coat of arms by state and parastatal organs, and public entities. |
5. |
According to these guidelines, the national coat of arms may not be used together with the coat of arms of a provincial or local government without the approval of national government. Details on how to obtain this approval are to be found at web site GCIS (http://www.gcis.gov.za). |
