1. Applications are awaited from persons who wish to act as markers of subjects (list attached) written during the October/November 2004 Senior Certificate Examination. These persons must satisfy the criteria in paragraph 2 below.

NB: AT A SCHOOL/INSTITUTION WITH A PASS RATE OF LESS THAN 40%, NO EDUCATOR WHO RETURNED A SUBJECT PASS RATE OF LESS THAN 50% IN THE SENIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR, MAY BE APPOINTED AS A MARKER IN THE SENIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR.

2. General criteria
2.1 Teaching experience: Educators who taught the subject on Grade 12 level in any of the past three years may apply.
2.2 Qualifications: A recognised three-year post Senior Certificate qualification which must include the subject concerned at second or third year level, or other appropriate post Senior Certificate qualifications.
2.3 All applicants must be from schools/institutions which prepare candidates for the Western Cape Senior Certificate Examination.

NB: IN ORDER NOT TO AFFECT THE FUNCTIONING OF THE SCHOOL/ INSTITUTION DUE TO THE ABSENTEEISM OF EDUCATORS, NO MORE THAN 30% OF EDUCATORS FROM A SCHOOL/INSTITUTION WILL BE APPOINTED AS MARKERS. THE WCED WILL TAKE A FINAL DECISION ON WHICH EDUCATORS CAN BE APPOINTED AS MARKERS.

2.4 The WCED supports the Employment Equity Act and all appointments of markers will be in line with the Employment Equity Plan. It is therefore imperative that applicants state their race and gender on all application forms.
2.5 Applicants who have indicated their intention to resign or retire and who will terminate their services with the WCED by 30 September 2004 will not be considered for appointment.
2.6 Applicants in governing body posts may apply, but educators remunerated by the WCED will be given preference during the nomination/appointment process.
2.7 An applicant must complete a separate application form for each paper for which he or she applies.
2.8 New applicants
2.8.1 Certified copies of their qualifications must accompany the application forms of all new applicants.
2.8.2 If the above-mentioned documents do not accompany a new applicant’s application form, the application will not be considered. NO exceptions will be made and no correspondence will be conducted with applicants in this regard.

Copies may be made of the attached form. Duly completed application forms must be submitted to the Directorate: Examinations by no later than 31 May 2004. Under no circumstances may applications be sent directly to the various examiners.

4. All marking will be done at a central venue in or near Cape Town, as determined by the Department.
5. Marking of examination scripts will commence on approximately Tuesday, 30 November 2004 at 07:30 and will be concluded on approximately Wednesday 8 December 2004 at 18:00. Exact dates and times will be announced later.
6. Markers will be expected to mark scripts for at least 8 hours daily. This excludes times set aside for lunch and tea breaks. The marking centre will be accessible for marking from 06:00 to 22:00 daily.
7. The marking tariff for each paper will be made available as soon as possible. Each moderator, examiner and marker responsible for the marking and/or moderation of scripts will be taxed in accordance with the Income Tax Act.
8. Please note that ALL applications must reach this office by no later than 31 May 2004. Applications received AFTER the closing date will NOT be considered. Applications must be submitted to

9. It is imperative that principals, EMDC Directors, circuit managers and curriculum advisors bring the contents of this examination minute to the notice of all educators concerned, including those on leave. This Directorate does not accept responsibility for educators who are not informed of the contents of the examination minute timeously.
10. Applicants must please indicate their meal preference on their application form and note that the department will not allow markers to change their meal preferences at the marking centre.
11. Applicants must please note that all application forms must be signed by the principal (in the case of educators), and by directors or delegated persons (in the case of principals, senior curriculum planners, chief curriculum planners and curriculum advisors). Unsigned forms will be returned to the applicants. The onus rests on applicants to ensure that the correctly completed application form reaches this office before or on the closing date.
