This year International Literacy Day falls on Wednesday 8 September, and International Literacy Week, which has been designated South African Children’s Book Week in 2004, runs from Monday 6 to Friday 10 September. |
2. |
To promote this significant occasion, all WCED institutions are encouraged to organise celebratory events for both learners and staff. |
3. |
Schools are especially encouraged to join in a moment of solidarity in the power of storytelling by participating in a nationwide Universal Storytelling Moment at 09:50 on Tuesday 7 September. The aim is to let every primary school learner in the country listen to a story at ‘Ten to Ten on Tuesday’. A guest speaker or member of staff could tell a story at a special assembly at that time, or teachers could do the same for individual classes. (Refer to Appendix A for a range of appropriate learner activities.) |

In order to contribute to a culture of reading, the Directorate: Curriculum Development and each of the 7 EMDCs have committed themselves to starting site-based book clubs. Each school is encouraged to follow this example by adopting a model that suits its context. (Refer to Appendix B for guidelines in this regard.) |
