1. Principals and educators at Western Cape Education Department (WCED) institutions are encouraged to nominate female learners currently taking Mathematics HG and Science HG at Grade 12 level, or who took the subjects at this level in 2002 or 2003, for Carnegie-South Africa Undergraduate Women’s scholarship awards.
2. Carnegie-South Africa Scholarship programme is an initiative of the National Department of Education (DoE) in collaboration with Carnegie in the United States of America. The programme aims to increase the numbers of women entering and graduating in the science, technology, engineering, health sciences, economic and education fields of study. So far thirteen female students from the Western Cape have benefited by this remarkable programme which has provided and will provide funding for three groups of women students entering higher education in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
3. To be eligible for the scholarship in 2005, female students must be in their Grade 12 year at a South African public school or must have matriculated from such a school in 2002 or 2003. Applicants must be South African citizens, among the top 5% achievers in their Grade 12 year and interested in one of the above-mentioned fields of study. Consideration will be given to financial needs. Each WCED public school with female learners in Grade 12 will be entitled to two forms. These schools, as well as students who have already left school, may obtain forms from the Education Management and Development Centres (EMDCs) or Head Office.
