In 2003 the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), in support of its Literacy Strategy and the implementation of the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS), supplied Foundation Phase classes with packs of 100 reading books. |
2. |
In the third term of 2004, in support of the introduction of the RNCS in the Intermediate Phase and in ongoing support of the Literacy Strategy, the WCED will supply each school with one pack of 100 reading books per Intermediate Phase class of learners, allocated in accordance with the number of classes, language and tested reading levels in the school. These multilingual packs have been put together by phase, reading and language experts and contain books for different reading levels. |
3. |
The books will be supplied to schools through the same book supplier who supplied the school with the Foundation Phase 100+ Books. However, if a school wishes to change its book supplier for this Intermediate Phase 100+ Books Project, the WCED must be notified of this. Schools which did not receive the notice sent out in June betimes, may use the attached Addendum A to indicate a change in bookseller. The completed Addendum A must then be submitted to the WCED by one of the following means by no later than 23 July 2004:
Fax: 021 467 2620 or 021 467 2258 or as an e-mail attachment with the subject heading ADDENDUM A, to curriculum at curr1@pgwc.gov.za
Note: Addendum A must only be submitted if a school wishes to change its booksupplier.

4. |
This project does not affect norms and standards funding as schools receive the books in addition to normal LSM allocations. |
5. |
Each pack will include a list of the titles ordered from the bookseller. Principals must supervise the management of these books and are required to
certify on the invoice that the delivery has been received
make a copy of certified invoice and list(s)
provide a copy of each list to the relevant teacher for inventory purposes
send the original certified invoice immediately to

It gives the WCED great pleasure to make this contribution to literacy development in the province and we sincerely hope that schools will take full advantage of this opportunity by making enthusiastic use of the books in the new year. |
