1. Queen Silvia of Sweden has launched an annual voter education project for learners to improve literacy skills, help children communicate with children in the global village, learn about democracy and develop voting skills by learning and reading about other children across the world, deciding on a winner and engaging in a voter educational process involving a ballot or the use of a specified website.
2. Schools are invited to participate in this learning experience and to encourage their learners to become responsible citizens in local, national and global communities.
3. The learning outcomes of the Learning Areas Social Sciences, Languages, Arts and Culture, Mathematics and Life Orientation, particularly in the Intermediate and Senior Phases, make these learning areas appropriate for learners to explore and develop their understanding of voting and democracy.
4. Competition entries must be received by no later than 31 March 2004. A child jury consisting of children from all over the world will make the final decision about the prize. A South African learner, Xola Dubula, from Ferndale Primary, Cape Town has been chosen to serve on this jury.
5. In order to register and receive further information, principals may contact Marlene Winberg, the South African Co-ordinator - World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child - at
