1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED), in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch and the World Population Foundation (WPF), has developed a CD-ROM Life Orientation information package which is also available in hard copy format. The programme has been designed to correspond to the new FET Life Orientation learning outcomes for Grades 10 to 12, which will be implemented from 2006. This programme promotes knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that will enable learners to respond positively, effectively and responsibly to the challenges of life.
2. A three-day workshop, to be hosted by the developers of the CD-ROM information package, will be held for educators responsible for Life Orientation in the high schools selected to participate in the pilot study. At this workshop two FET educators will be trained to use the programme. They will also be provided with appropriate support material for the implementation of the programme. This research has been approved by the WCED Directorate: Research (see Annexure B) and the University of Stellenbosch ethics committee.
3. The workshop will be held at the Health Sciences Faculty, University of Stellenbosch, Parow. Educators will be expected to register promptly at 13:00 on Wednesday 31 March 2004 and to attend the full workshop which will close at 15:00 on Saturday 3 April 2004. They will be reimbursed for their travelling costs, and accommodation and meals will be provided.
4. Principals of selected high schools are requested to complete the attached Annexure A and submit it to the project administrative officer, Ms MD Conradie (address on annexure) by no later than 27 February 2004.
