1. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued Circular S13 of 2015, dated 22 July 2015, regarding the incremental implementation of FET literature from 2016 to 2018.

2. Circular S13 requires that literature for Grade 10 should be implemented in 2018 in line with the attached National Catalogue of FET Literature for Grade 10 to 12 (2015). Various gaps in the subject material were identified in the aforementioned catalogue. However, the DBE has advised that they are currently in the process of filling the existing gaps and will then provide a revised catalogue once the processes have been finalised.

3. Schools are therefore required to order FET literature for Grade 11 for study in 2019 according to the guidelines provided in point 4 below.

4. Schools must adhere to the following Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) requirements when ordering literature books:

  1. Home Language: one Novel, one Drama and one Poetry Anthology. For African languages, the Novel can be substituted with Folklore.
  2. First Additional Language: any two of the genres – Novel, Poetry, Drama and Short Stories.
  3. Second Additional Language: any one of the genres – Novel, Poetry, Drama and Short Stories.
5. In the following cases there are no literature options provided:

  1. Afrikaans Second Additional Language: No Drama, Poetry or Short Stories options.
  2. English Second Additional Language: No Short Stories or Poetry options.
  3. isiXhosa First Additional Language: No Short Stories options.
  4. isiXhosa Second Additional Language: No genre options.
  5. Sesotho First and Second Additional Language: No genre options.
  6. Setswana First Additional Language: No Drama, Poetry or Short Stories options.
  7. Setswana Home Language: No Drama options.
6. Schools are expected to use their existing literature titles for the abovementioned genres to fill the gaps in the National Catalogue for Grade 11.

7. Schools should complete the attached ordering template for the required number of FET literature books for Grade 11. The number of books that will be required per selected genre must be indicated.

8. The completed template must be emailed to Shameez.Gurah@westerncape.gov.za by Friday, 01 June 2018.

9. The Western Cape Education Department will bear the cost of the newly required literature books for Grade 11.

10. Kindly bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all concerned.
