The Minister of Basic Education gazetted the repeal of the proviso restricting Accounting to learners offering Mathematics only in Government Notice No. 1402, Government Gazette No. 41321 of 15 December 2017, in accordance with the requirements of the National Education Policy Act, 1996 (Act 27 of 1996). |
2. |
Subsequently Circular 0046/2017 (based on Circular S13 of 2017) was issued on 04 December 2017 regarding the repeal of the proviso. |
3. |
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has considered the implementation implications and directs that learners who were disadvantaged by the proviso in Grade 10 in 2017 should be allowed to change the subject(s) if they so wish, in line with the new policy amendments. |
4. |
Therefore, learners currently enrolled for Grade 11 in 2018 who opt for Accounting may combine this with either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy. This policy amendment will also apply for Grade 12 in 2019. |
5. |
Schools will therefore be allowed to capture their Grade 11 subject change requests related to the repeal of the Accounting proviso until 30 June 2018. |
6. |
Education districts need to approve these changes by no later than 31 July 2018. |
7. |
Learners will have the option to change as soon as possible. This decision must be made in the best interests of the learner and by written agreement with the learner’s parents/guardians. |
8. |
Principals are kindly requested to bring this information to the attention of all current Grade 11 learners, parents/guardians and teachers. |
