1. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is concerned about the credibility of scores emanating from the school-based Life Orientation assessments and has proposed a common assessment task (CAT) for Life Orientation for 2012.
2. The proposed date for the administration of the CAT is 7 September 2012.
3. The DBE has produced an exemplar and an assessment guideline which stipulates the scope and coverage of the CAT. The exemplar and assessment guideline are attached as Annexure A.
4. The CAT aims to set a national standard for Life Orientation and will assist in ensuring the validity and reliability of the Life Orientation scores.
5. The DBE is in the process of amending the current Life Orientation policy to accommodate this external component for the future.
6. The pilot CAT will be distributed to schools in September 2012 and schools are requested to use this assessment for standard setting. Schools that wish to write the assessment on 7 September 2012 may also include the task as part of their school-based assessment.
7. Principals are kindly requested to bring this information to the notice of all Life Orientation teachers and learners.
