The newly developed Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) will be phased in to all grades over the next 3 years, 2012 to 2014. |

Circular 0049/2010 (dated 2010-12-09) provided schools with the implementation plan for the roll-out of the CAPS for the period 2012 to 2014. |

To support the implementation of the CAPS in all grades, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will supply all learners and teachers with the requisite CAPS-aligned textbooks for each subject. |

In 2012 the CAPS will be implemented in Grades 1, 2, 3 and 10. To support the implementation of the National Curriculum in these grades the WCED will supply every learner at Public Ordinary Schools with the following textbooks for the Foundation Phase (Grades 1, 2 and 3) and Grade 10 during 2011:
Grades 1, 2, and 3: Four textbooks per learner: a textbook will be provided for each learner for each of the following subjects:
- Home Language
- First Additional Language
- Mathematics
- Life Skills
Grade 10: Seven textbooks per learner: a textbook for each of the 7 subjects taken by a Grade 10 learner.
Teachers Guides for all subjects.

During 2012 the WCED will supply every learner at Public Ordinary Schools with the following textbooks:
Grades 4, 5, and 6: Six textbooks per learner: a textbook for each of the following subjects:
- Home Language
- First Additional Language
- Mathematics
- Life Skills
- Natural Sciences and Technology
- Social Sciences
Grades 7, 8, 9: Nine textbooks per learner: a textbook for each of the following subjects:
- Home Language
- First Additional Language
- Mathematics
- Natural Sciences
- Technology
- Social Sciences
- Economics and Management Sciences
- Creative Arts
- Life Orientation
Grade 11: Seven textbooks per learner: a textbook for each of the 7 subjects taken by a Grade 11 learner.

In 2014 the CAPS will be implemented in Grade 12. During 2013 the WCED will supply every learner at Public Ordinary Schools with the following textbooks:

The ordering of textbooks for CAPS will be managed centrally by the WCED. |
8. |
Schools will be required to timeously supply and verify the enrolment figures of learners per grade, subject and language (HL and FAL) to ensure the accuracy of orders. |

Schools will be required to implement an efficient textbook management plan to ensure that the LTSM supplied is retained for at least four years. |
