1. We refer to Circular 0028/2009 of 22 August 2009.
2. The following is applicable for the subjects Afrikaans, English, Xhosa, Sotho and Tswana:
2.1 The books listed for Grades 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are recommendations.
2.2 The following are the prescriptions for all the above-mentioned languages in Grades 10 and 11:
2.2.1 HOME LANGUAGE candidates study poetry, one novel and one play. All three genres are examined internally. Short stories, or any of the genres listed in the Subject Assessment Guidelines of January 2008, may be used for oral response to literature. The requirement is that the genre that is used for oral response to literature must not be one of the genres examined in the literature examination (Paper 2). The oral response to literature is also examined internally;
2.2.2 FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE candidates study ANY TWO of the following: poetry, novel, play, short stories. These two genres are examined internally. Any of the genres listed in the Subject Assessment Guidelines of January 2008 may be used for the oral response to literature. The requirement is that the genre that is used for oral response to literature must not be one of the genres examined in the literature examination (Paper 2). The oral response to literature is also examined internally;
2.2.3 SECOND ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE candidates study ANY ONE of the following genres: poetry, novel, play, short stories. This genre is examined internally. Second Additional Language candidates do not have to do an oral response to literature task and therefore study only ONE genre for the year.
3. The Department apologises for any uncertainty that may have arisen as a result of Circular 0028/2009.
