1. In Circular 51/2007 of 20 September 2007 and previous circulars regarding the Norms and Standards for school funding, principals of public schools were requested to apply saving measures in order to keep their electricity accounts low. Because of the seriousness of the electricity shortage in the country and Eskom`s appeal to all users to save electricity, all principals are again requested to support the campaign by implementing the following saving measures:
1.1 Outside lights must be switched off during the day.
1.2 Only when natural light is inadequate should classroom lights be switched on during the day.
1.3 Only security lights and lights of corner classrooms must be left switched on at night.
1.4 During weekends and school holidays, the above-mentioned lights must be switched on at night and switched off in the morning.
1.5 The installation of pre-paid electricity meters must be considered as these will enable schools to exercise better control over their use of and spending on electricity. Eskom and most municipalities have indicated that they can install these meters.
2. Kindly bring this circular to the attention of the governing body, staff and learners of your school.
