1. Section 18 of the Regulations pertaining to the Conduct, Administration and Management of Assessment for the National Senior Certificate (Government Gazette No 31337, August 2008) prescribes the conditions for granting a supplementary examination to candidates.
2. The first National Senior Certificate Supplementary examination will be administered in February/March 2009 for candidates who meet the requirements as stipulated in the above-mentioned regulations. The requirements are summarised as follows:
2.1 If a candidate has not satisfied the minimum pass requirements in the final external examination, but requires a maximum of two subjects to obtain the National Senior Certificate, he or she may register for a maximum of two subjects for the supplementary examination within 21 days after the release of results. These two subjects must be subjects that the candidate sat for in the previous end-of-year examination.
2.2 If a candidate is medically unfit and as a result is absent from one or more examinations, he or she may register for the supplementary examination. Documentary evidence must be submitted at the centre of registration.
2.3 A candidate who provides documentary evidence showing that he or she qualifies for admission to a Higher Education Institution or for an occupation, but does not satisfy the Higher Education Faculty requirements or the requirements for the specific occupation may register for a maximum of two subjects.
3. The NSC Supplementary examination is scheduled to commence on 17 February 2009 and conclude on 25 March 2009.
4. Two examination sessions are scheduled for each day. The morning session and afternoon session will commence at 09:00 and 14:00 respectively.
5. Attached to this circular is the timetable for the 2009 National Senior Certificate Supplementary examination.
6. Registration forms for the supplementary examination will be posted to all candidates who qualify for the examination immediately after the release of results. The completed registration forms must be posted to the following address:

7. The closing date for the supplementary examination entries is Friday, 23 January 2009. Principals of schools and candidates are requested to adhere strictly to this date, as late entries will not be accepted.
8. Examination centres for the writing of the supplementary examinations will be established at secondary schools and other venues as determined by the department. If a school is not available as a venue for the supplementary examination, the principal must notify his or her IMG adviser by no later than Friday, 23 January 2009, so that an alternative venue can be arranged.
9. The same chief invigilators and invigilators who were involved in the conduct of the November 2008 National Senior Certificate examination will be used for invigilating this examination, as stipulated in their signed contracts.
10. The chief invigilator must ensure that candidates enter the examination venue 35 minutes before the official starting time of the examination session. This time is to be used as follows:
10.1 The first 25 minutes must be used to settle the candidates in their correct seats, to distribute question papers, etc.
10.2 During the remaining 10 minutes candidates must be given an opportunity to read through the question paper.
10.3 No writing or making of notes is allowed at any stage during these 35 minutes. Any infringement of this rule will constitute an irregularity.
10.4 Candidates must finish writing at the time indicated on the examination timetable.

11. Principals and centre managers are required to bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all candidates who wrote the November 2008 National Senior Certificate Examination.
