FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE
Schools must choose two of the four genres (Novel, Drama, Short Story, Poetry) for literature study in the First Additional Languages. For external examination purposes, one title from each of the two chosen genres must be studied.
Novel
Novels in the 11 official South African languages are listed in Appendix B. If this genre is chosen, schools must choose one of the listed titles for study.
Drama
Dramas in 9 official South African languages are listed in Appendix D. If this genre is chosen, schools must choose one of the listed titles for study.
Please note that there are no dramas prescribed for Ndebele and Xhosa First Additional Language and so this genre is not an option in those two language courses.
Short Story
The selections of stories for 2009 for Afrikaans and English First Additional Languages are listed in Appendix F.
Selections of short stories for the African First Additional Languages for 2009 have not yet been announced. The national Department of Education will announce these in due course, and the WCED will inform schools accordingly.
The national Department of Education will indicate in a circular to provincial education departments which short stories are to be studied for external examination purposes in 2010 and 2011. This information will be provided in June 2009 and June 2010 respectively, and the WCED will then inform schools accordingly.
Poetry
The poetry selections 2009 for each of the 11 official South African languages are listed in Appendix G.
The national Department of Education will indicate in a circular to provincial education departments which poems are to be studied for external examination purposes in 2010 and 2011. This information will be provided in June 2009 and June 2010 respectively, and the WCED will then inform schools accordingly.
