1. Circular 0028/2008 of 14 August 2008 has reference.
2.1 The following is applicable for the subjects Afrikaans, English, Xhosa, Sotho and Tswana:
2.1.1 Higher Grade and Standard Grade have been phased out. Languages are offered as Home Language, First Additional Language or Second Additional Language.
2.1.2 The books listed in the lists for Grades 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are recommendations.
2.2 The following are the prescriptions for all the above-mentioned languages in Grades 10 and 11:
2.2.1 HOME LANGUAGE studies poetry, one novel and one play/drama. All these genres are examined internally. Short stories, or any of the genres listed in the Subject Assessment Guidelines of January 2008, can be used for the oral response to literature. The requirement is that the genre that is used for oral response to literature must not be one of the genres that are examined in the literature examination (Paper 2). The oral response to literature is also examined internally.
2.2.2 FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE studies ANY TWO of the following: poetry, novel, play/drama, short stories. These two genres are examined internally. Any of the genres listed in the Subject Assessment Guidelines of January 2008, can be used for the oral response to literature. The requirement is that the genre that is used for oral response to literature must not be one of the genres that are examined in the literature examination (Paper 2). The oral response to literature is also examined internally.
2.2.3 SECOND ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE studies ANY ONE of the following: poetry, novel, play, short stories. This genre is examined internally. Second Additional Language candidates do not have to do an oral response to literature task and, therefore, only study ONE genre for the year.
