1. The promotion requirements for all learners at public and independent schools that follow the National Curriculum Statement and offer Grade 9 are clearly stated in Government Gazette 29626 of 12 February 2007. The results of the continuous assessment, as well as Sections A and B of the common tasks for assessment (CTAs), determine promotion to Grade 10.
2. The CTAs are administered in the 4th term of the Grade 9 academic year and are the only formal assessment tasks that are recorded for that term.
3. Please note that the CTAs (Sections A and B) must be treated with strict confidentiality and that they may not be made available to any unauthorised person or to any learner prior to the official conducting of the assessments.
4. Section A of each CTA must be administered in schools in the fourth term and must form part of the normal academic programme. The school must continue to function in the normal way during the period of administering Section A.
5. Section B of each CTA will consist of individual tasks and must be administered under controlled examination conditions.
6. Section B of each CTA must be administered from 17 November to 28 November 2008 according to the attached national timetable (Addendum A).
7. Principals are reminded that the national timetable for administering Section B of the CTAs must be strictly adhered to. Failure to adhere to this timetable will constitute an examination irregularity and will be dealt with accordingly.
8. Home languages
8.1 The home languages will be written on 17 November 2008. The first session will be from 09:00 to 11:00 and the second session from 12:00 to 14:00.
8.2 To accommodate learners who are offering two official languages at home language level, the following measures will apply:
8.2.1 The one home language will be written on the 17th of November from 09:00 to 11:00 and the other home language will be written on the same day, from 12:00 to 14:00.
8.2.2 To ensure the credibility of this written task, all learners offering two official languages at home language level must remain at the school under controlled conditions after the first session.
8.2.3 Principals and examination managers must ensure that learners writing a home language paper in the afternoon do not have any contact with learners who wrote a home language paper in morning.
8.2.4 As this section is administered under formal examination conditions, no learner will be allowed to have a cell phone with him or her. Measures must be in place to ensure that this is managed properly.
8.2.5 Memoranda for Section B of the CTAs for home languages will be made available after the second session on the afternoon of 17 November 2008.
9. First Additional Languages
9.1 All first additional languages will be written on 18 November 2008, from 09:00 to 11:00.
9.2 If there are any learners offering two languages at first additional language level, they will stay on the premises under controlled conditions and write the other first additional language paper on 18 November from 12:00 to 14:00. The same procedures as for the writing of home languages on 17 November must be followed.
10. Second Additional Languages

All learners offering languages at second additional language level will write on 28 November 2008 from 09:00 to 11:00.

11. Principals must ensure that every teacher, learner and parent has a copy of the attached timetable (Addendum A). The timetable is also available on the GET Assessment web site at http://curriculum.pgwc.gov.za/site/21/page/view
