1. Introduction

The examinations for the new National Senior Certificate (NSC) will be written for the first time this year. It is extremely important that school principals set the tone for these examinations by ensuring that candidates understand what type of behaviour is expected of them during the writing of the examinations.

2. Last day of school for Grade 12 learners
2.1 Circular 0010/2008 provided the timetable for the final examinations, which commence on 29 October 2008. The last official school day for all Grade 12 learners is 24 October 2008. Schools are urged to use the time leading up to this date effectively so as to ensure that all candidates are thoroughly prepared for the examinations.
2.2 Principals are requested to inform all Grade 12 learners that they must be available until the last day of the school term (5 December 2008), in case it should be necessary to reschedule the writing of a particular examination paper.

3. Dress code during the writing of examinations
3.1 School uniforms are important for the maintaining of school culture, pride and discipline.
3.2 In the past, most schools in the Western Cape ensured that their candidates were dressed in school uniform during the writing of the Senior Certificate examinations. This greatly assisted in maintaining discipline during the examinations. Furthermore, it helped to distinguish between candidates and invigilators.
3.3 The National Senior Certificate examination is still part of the official school year for Grade 12 learners.
3.4 School principals are therefore requested to inform their Grade 12 candidates that the wearing of school uniform is compulsory when writing the NSC examinations.
3.5 The WCED encourages independent schools to also comply with this request.

4. Principals are requested to bring the contents of this circular to the attention of their staff, invigilation team, parents and Grade 12 learners.
