1. Introduction

Circular 0025/2007 provided information regarding the Grade 11 examination in November 2007 as well as the timetable for the subjects that must be written by all public schools in the Western Cape. It was indicated in the circular that Paper 3 for languages must be written prior to the commencement of the rest of the examination.

Independent schools that choose to write these national examinations must inform the Director: Examinations by 31 August 2007 of their intention to write the examinations. Failure to inform the WCED will result in these schools not receiving question papers for the examination.


2. Paper 3 for languages
2.1 Paper 3 for all the languages that appear in the timetable of the Western Cape must be conducted in accordance with the national times provided below:

2.2 Schools must follow the Subject Assessment Guidelines for compiling the final mark for the various languages.

3. Geography Paper 2

In order to accommodate Muslim learners who may attend Friday prayers, the WCED requested a change of the time for the Geography Paper 2 on Friday, 16 November 2007. The request has been approved by the DoE, which means that the Geography Paper 2 will now begin at 14:00 and finish at 15:30.


4. Second Additional Language
4.1 The WCED will set provincial question papers for Afrikaans and isiXhosa 2nd Additional Languages. These papers must be written on the dates provided in the accompanying final timetable.
4.2 The following table provides an indication of the papers that the WCED will provide for Afrikaans Second Additional Language:

4.3 The literature part of Paper 1 for Afrikaans must be set by the school out of 20 and provided to the learners on the day and time that Paper 1 is written.
4.4 The following table provides an indication of the papers that the WCED will provide for isiXhosa Second Additional Language:

4.5 The literature paper for isiXhosa must be set by the school out of 40 and scaled to a total of 20. This paper must be written at a date determined by the individual school. Further information regarding the Grade 11 examination for isiXhosa in 2007 is provided in the Addendum A accompanying this circular.
4.6 The decision to have three papers for isiXhosa Second Additional Language is a once off concession that applies to Grade 11 in 2007 only. In 2008 onwards, the number of papers will follow the Subject Assessment Guidelines and have two papers as occurs for Afrikaans Second Additional Language.

5. The final timetable for Grade 11 now includes Afrikaans and isiXhosa Second Additional Languages and the various subject names in Afrikaans as it appears in the Government Gazette. The timetable also contains the number of the session which will appear on the packs of question papers provided to schools.
