1. The National Council of Women of South Africa has expressed its concern about the insensitive manner in which parents are treated by administrative staff at some public schools, especially with regard to the payment of school fees.
2. The above-mentioned Council also adopted a resolution at its recent congress requesting the Minister of Education to introduce standardised procedures to improve professionalism and competence of administrative staff at public schools.
3. The National Education Department has now requested provincial education departments to sensitise schools to these concerns which have been raised.
4. Principals of public schools and chairpersons of governing bodies are requested to remind personnel of their obligation to treat parents with the necessary sensitivity. Please remind these employees of the principles of Batho Pele and iKapa Elihlumayo, and ensure that they are trained to deal with the public in a courteous and sensitive manner.
5. We would, however, like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to those administrative personnel who have always treated parents with commendable politeness and tact.
