1. Your attention is drawn to the contents of Circular 0019/2006 of 20 April 2006 in the above regard.
2. In paragraph 1.7 of the aforementioned circular, principals of public schools were requested to inform this office, via their EMDCs, of the dates on which governing body elections will take place for their schools during May 2006 and June 2006. The election dates have not yet been received for all schools. It would be appreciated if the principals concerned could submit the outstanding information to their EMDCs before Wednesday, 31 May 2006.
3. It is once again emphasised that all governing body elections, (irrespective of the expiry date of the terms of office of the governing bodies), must take place between 1 May 2006 and 30 June 2006.
4. With reference to paragraph 1.5 of the aforementioned circular, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has obtained legal advice which indicates that the election of a new school governing body may proceed even though the current governing body’s three-year term of office has not yet expired. The WCED is therefore within its rights to request that all schools proceed with the election of their governing bodies between 1 May 2006 and 30 June 2006.
5. Schools are wished well with the election of their new governing bodies.
