Circular 0011/2006 provided the general requirements for learners who offer the following Music programmes provided by the relevant external Music bodies:
Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music Practical Music Examination
Trinity College of London Practical Music Examination
UNISA Practical Music Examination
|
1.2 |
Learners who follow the National Curriculum Statement (Grades 10 – 12, General) with a view to obtaining a National Senior Certificate must complete the three-year study programme for all subjects enrolled for, that is the seven required subjects, as well as any additional subjects.
|
1.3 |
These learners must also complete the necessary internal assessment, namely school-based assessment, which will contribute 25% of the final assessment for Grades 10 to 12. |
2. |
School-Based Assessment (SBA)
The national Department of Education has informed provinces via Circular S1 of 2006 of the following regulations and procedures regarding the school-based assessment for these programmes:
|
2.1 |
All learners, including those following Music programmes with external Music assessment bodies, must fulfil the school-based assessment requirements for Grades 10 – 12.
|
2.2 |
The SBA component for Music offered by these three external Music assessment bodies will consist of FOUR tasks that will be assessed by the teacher offering the programme.
|
2.2.1 |
Each task will be marked out of 25 thereby providing a total out of 100 marks. This mark out of 100 will be the SBA mark for the learner.
|
2.2.2 |
The four tasks are provided below:
1. | Rudiments of music and harmony | Learner will do a section from a theory or harmony workbook or examination. | 25 marks |
2. | Technical development | Learner will perform scales, arpeggios or technical studies. | 25 marks |
3. | Practical performance | A recording must be made of one or more of the learner’s pieces that are being prepared for the practical examination. | 25 marks |
4. | Practical performance | The learner will do a written assignment on any aspect relating to the practical performance, such as research on a composer or an analysis and description of performed pieces.
A different assignment is compulsory each year. | 25 marks |
|
2.3 |
The portfolio containing the SBA work of each learner must be submitted by the Music teacher to the principal of the school where the learner is enrolled for the NSC programme during the period 10 to 20 September of each year.
|
3. |
The assessment for learners wishing to do an external examination in Music with one of the approved Music assessment bodies must therefore include the following:
|
3.1 |
Practical examination
|
3.3 |
School-based assessment as explained above
|
4. |
It is the responsibility of the external music assessment bodies offering these Music programmes to ensure that all the marks obtained by the learner in the above three Music components are forwarded timeously to the centre (school) where the learner is registered for the full NSC programme.
|
5. |
The principal of the school remains responsible for the reporting of the marks obtained by the learner in the three Music components to the WCED, which is responsible for the conducting of the final external examinations.
|
6. |
Please note that although it was stated in Circular 0011/2006 (3.4) that learners will not be allowed to complete the prerequisite theory component of the selected Music programme prior to their registration in Grade 10 for the NSC, this requirement will not be applicable to the 2006 Grade 10 learners who have already commenced with the theory component prior to their registration for Grade 10. From 2007, learners will not be allowed to complete the prerequisite theory component of the selected Music programme prior to their registration in Grade 10 for the NSC.
|
7. |
Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all concerned.
