1. The term of office of each public school governing body elected or constituted in 2003 in terms of the Measures Relating to Governing Bodies of Public Schools and promulgated in terms of the South African Schools Act (Act 84 of 1996), as amended, will expire in the course of the year 2006.
2. The term of office of a governing body is three years, beginning on the date of the governing body’s first meeting after the election. Schools that held elections in 2003 and whose governing body’s term of office expires during 2006, must make arrangements for the election of new governing bodies during 2006. Elections must be held between May 2006 and June 2006, in terms of a decision by the Department of Education.
3. To ensure an orderly electoral process, the WCED intends, once again, training principals as electoral officers to enable them to handle the election successfully. Training sessions will be conducted in different centres and it is important that all principals attend these sessions. The training programme will be made available in due course.
4. The Manual is attached and principals are requested to bring the Measures which were sent to schools during 2003 under cover of Circular 24/2003, to the training sessions.
5. The Western Cape Education Department wishes to thank present members of governing bodies for the unselfish service that they have rendered in the interest of education.
