1. The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) for Further Education and Training (FET) will be implemented in all Western Cape Education Department (WCED) public and other registered schools in Grade 10 in January 2006.
2. During the June/July school holidays, orientation workshops were held for nineteen subjects.

3. SUBJECT ORIENTATION

Orientation in the following subjects will take place during the September school holidays from 26 to 30 September 2005:

Tourism, Mathematical Literacy, Economics, Computer Applications Technology (CAT), Agricultural Sciences and the four Technology subjects (Civil Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design).


3.1 Only schools that have met the application due date to offer Tourism in 2006 may register teachers for this course. Principals are earnestly requested to register only teachers who will be teaching Tourism in Grade 10 in 2006 for the September 2005 orientation session.
3.2 There will be two options for teachers attending the Mathematical Literacy orientation. A 5-day programme and a 3-day programme. Teachers who attended the June/July orientation programme in Mathematics should register for the 3-day option in Mathematical Literacy. The 3-day programme will focus on planning within the NCS context. Teachers who did not attend any June/July subject orientation must register for the 5-day option.
3.3 There will be two options for teachers attending the Economics orientation. A 5-day programme and a 3-day programme. Teachers who attended the June/July orientation programme in Accounting or Business Studies should register for the 3-day option in Economics. The 3-day programme will focus on planning within the NCS context. Teachers who did not attend any June/July subject orientation must register for the 5-day option.
3.4 The four Technology subjects (Civil Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design) will only offer a 3-day orientation session, which will focus on planning within the NCS context.
3.5 Agricultural Sciences will only offer a three-day orientation session, which will focus on planning within the NCS context.
3.6 CAT: All teachers must attend the 5-day session.
3.7 The 5-day orientation sessions start on Monday, 26 September 2005 at 08:30 until Friday, 30 September 2005 at 15:00.
3.8 The 3-day orientation sessions start on Wednesday, 28 September 2005 at 08:30 until Friday, 30 September at 15:00.

4. REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
4.1 The registration form (Annexure A) must be completed by the principal of the school.
4.2 The completed registration form, certified by the principal of the school in the space provided, must be submitted to the following address by Friday, 26 August 2005. Principals are earnestly requested to adhere strictly to this date.

4.3 Once the registrations have been received, teachers will be allocated to venues and informed accordingly.
4.4 A circular in respect of travel arrangements and procedures for claims will be sent out closer to the workshop date.
4.5 A final registration list will be compiled on 26 August 2005 (due date). No late registrations will be accepted. The co-operation of all principals in submitting the registration of their teachers promptly will therefore be appreciated.

5. Preparation for the subject orientation workshops
5.1 All schools have received four sets of the FET NCS Grades 10-12 documents (English only) for Economics, Computer Applications Technology, Mathematical Literacy and Tourism. Teachers must read the FET NCS for the subjects that they teach.
5.2 The following documents must be brought to the subject orientation workshops:
Subject Information Guidelines and the Subject Analysis of new Knowledge, Skills, Methodology, IT and Assessment Requirements
5.3 Teachers are encouraged to visit the FET website http://curriculum.wcape.school.za (http://curriculum.wcape.school.za) (goto "Barriers to Learning" > "Resources" > "Grade 10 - 12 Issues" > "National Senior Certificate") and download the document entitled The National Senior Certificate: A qualification at level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) in preparation for the orientation workshops. 6. Orientation sessions in Religion Studies will be announced at a later stage once the relevant documentation has been finalised.
