1. A copy of the provisional timetable for the 2004 Senior Certificate Examinations is attached.
2. Examinations will commence with the writing of the question papers for Afrikaans First Language and the African First Languages offered by the WCED. As two religious holidays fall within the examination period this year, consideration was given to Muslim and Hindu candidates. In order to prevent the examination period from exceeding the 6 weeks’ period set aside for it, Friday afternoons will also be utilised this year.
3. The dates on which the question papers for the six national subjects, namely Accounting HG and SG, Biology HG and SG, English Second (Additional) Language HG and SG, History HG and SG, Mathematics HG and SG and Physical Science HG and SG, will be written have been determined by the national Department of Education (DoE) and are not subject to change, except by national consensus.
4. Subjects indicated as SG on the attached timetable are only offered on standard grade. Subjects in the upper portion of each block are written in the morning and those in the lower portion in the afternoon.
5. Where possible, the WCED will try to accommodate candidates who also enter for certain subjects examined by the DoE (N-Subjects) and by other examining bodies, e.g. the Independent Examining Board (IEB). Preference will, however, be given to candidates writing WCED papers.
6. Principals are requested to inform the WCED (Head: Education (For attention: Mr TJ Magwaca), Western Cape Education Department, Private Bag X9114, Cape Town, 8000 or per fax to Mr TJ Magwaca at (021) 467 2620) in writing of any clashes in the timetable, or of subjects that may have been omitted, before Monday 31 May 2004. The shifting of a subject will only be considered if it will not have a negative impact on the majority of candidates affected by the shift.
7. The practical components of the examinations for Computer Studies HG and SG fall within the official examination period.
8. Examination dates for subjects taught at WCED educational institutions, but examined by other examining bodies, will be determined later. This may necessitate adjustments to the timetable.
9. It must be borne in mind that this is a provisional timetable that is subject to change. The final examination timetable will be sent to all institutions towards the end of the third term, after the initial processing of examination entries.
10. Heads are requested to inform all Senior Certificate candidates that they must be available until the last day of the 4th school term, should it be necessary to reschedule the writing of a particular examination paper.
