1. A copy of the provisional timetable for the 2003 Senior Certificate Examination is attached.
2. Schools must note that as from 2003 the number of the common national subjects has been increased from five to six with the inclusion of History HG and SG. The dates of these six common national subjects, namely, Accounting HG and SG, Biology HG and SG, English Second (Additional) Language HG and SG, History HG and SG, Mathematics HG and SG and Physical Science HG and SG, have been determined by the Department of Education (DoE) and are not subject to change, except by national consensus.
3. Subjects offered on the standard grade only are indicated as SG. Subjects in the upper portion of each block on the attached timetable are written in the morning and those in the lower portion in the afternoon.
4. Where possible, the WCED will try to accommodate candidates who also enter for certain subjects examined by the DoE (N-Subjects) and by other examining bodies, e.g. the Independent Examinations Board (IEB). Preference will, however, be given to candidates writing WCED papers.
5. All principals are requested to inform the WCED before Friday, 30 May 2003 of any clashes in the timetable or of subjects that have been omitted. Please write to: The Head: Education, Western Cape Education Department, (For attention: TJ Magwaca), Private Bag X9114, Cape Town, 8000. Changes to the provisional timetable will be made only in instances where the requested shift of a subject will not have a negative impact on the majority of candidates affected by the change.
6. The practical components of the examinations for Computer Studies HG and SG will be written at 09:00 on Thursday, 18 September 2003 and Friday, 19 September 2003 respectively.
7. Examination dates for subjects taught at educational institutions of the WCED but examined by other examining bodies will be determined later. This may necessitate adjustments to the timetable.
8. Please note that this is a provisional timetable that may undergo changes. The final examination timetable will be sent to all institutions early in the third term, after the initial processing of the examination entries.
9. Please inform all candidates that they must be available to write examination until the last day of the 4th school term, in case it is necessary to reschedule the writing of a particular examination paper.
