1. Background

This circular accompanies the Inclusive Curriculum Resource File provided by the Western Cape Education Department to all educational institutions to assist educators with the implementation of curriculum issues arising from Education White Paper 6: Special Needs Education, Building an Inclusive Education and Training System, July 2001.


2. Inclusive Curriculum Resource File

Each file will consist of the following:

2.1 A lever arch file with a cover page
2.2 Six file dividers
2.3 A set of printed materials, Module 1, which includes the following:
2.3.1 An introduction to inclusive education
2.3.2 Background to the barriers to learning
2.3.3 Accessing the inclusive curriculum
2.3.4 Managing support
2.4 A copy of the Curriculum 2005 Assessment Guidelines

3. Purpose and management of file

Each institution is requested to appoint a co-ordinator who will accept responsibility for maintaining and promoting the file and for keeping educators informed of its contents. The file is intended to develop into a particularly useful reference for educators who need assistance in dealing with learners who are experiencing barriers to learning. The file should be available to all educators when they receive training in the Revised National Curriculum Statement and Inclusive Education.


4. Future modules for the Inclusive Curriculum Resource File

Schools will receive additional modules periodically. These will include practical hints and strategies for inclusive education.


5. Support

Schools may contact their respective EMDCs for additional support and guidance.
