If an educator has utilised all her or his accrued annual leave, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) may grant her or him unpaid leave up to a maximum of 184 consecutive days (calendar days). |

An educator may utilise unpaid leave in the following instances without first having exhausted her / his available leave credits: |
2.1 |
|
arrest, imprisonment or appearance in court on a criminal charge that leads to a conviction, |
2.2 |
|
a criminal sentence; or |
2.3 |
|
special circumstances (applications to be considered on merit). |

Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all educators in your institution / office / directorate, including those on leave, and have them sign and date it. Principals must ensure that a copy of this circular is given to the chairperson of the School Governing Body for information. |
