1. If an educator has utilised all her or his accrued annual leave, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) may grant her or him unpaid leave up to a maximum of 184 consecutive days (calendar days).

2. An educator may utilise unpaid leave in the following instances without first having exhausted her / his available leave credits:
2.1 arrest, imprisonment or appearance in court on a criminal charge that leads to a conviction,
2.2 a criminal sentence; or
2.3 special circumstances (applications to be considered on merit).

3. Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all educators in your institution / office / directorate, including those on leave, and have them sign and date it. Principals must ensure that a copy of this circular is given to the chairperson of the School Governing Body for information.

4. You are kindly requested to place a copy of this circular together with copies of the other circulars on leave in a separate file / cover for future use / reference purposes.
