The measures regarding the granting of special leave for examination purposes are as follows:

1. An educator may be granted special leave for examination purposes with full pay for each day on which the educator sits as a candidate for an examination approved for this purpose by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

2. In order to prepare for the examination one additional day’s special leave with full pay may be granted in respect of each day on which the educator sits for the examination. The additional day(s) may be taken prior to the examination. The additional day(s) for preparation for the examination may not be taken after the date of the examination.

3. Special leave for examination purposes is not deducted from the leave credits of an educator.

4. Applications for examination leave must be accompanied by documentary evidence/ examination roster and must in all circumstances be applied for prior to the leave taking effect. Under no circumstances will the WCED consider the granting of special leave with full pay for examination purposes in cases where the application for such leave is submitted to the head of the institution/WCED after the leave has already commenced. In such cases, leave without pay shall be granted so as to cover the educator’s absence from duty.

5. Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all educators in your institution/ office/ directorate, including those on leave, and have them sign and date it. Principals must ensure that a copy of this circular is given to the chairperson of the School Governing Body for information.

6. You are kindly requested to place a copy of this circular together with copies of the other circulars on leave in a separate file / cover for future use / reference purposes.
