1. The term of office of all governing bodies of public schools elected or constituted in 2000 in terms of the Measures relating to Governing Bodies of Public Schools and promulgated in terms of the South African Schools Act, 1996 (Act 84 of 1996), as amended, will expire in the course of the year 2003.
2. The term of office of a governing body stretches over a period of three years, starting from the date of the governing body’s first meeting after the election.
3. EMDC directors and principals of public schools are requested to make arrangements betimes for the election of new governing bodies in accordance with the above-mentioned Measures and the Departmental Manual in this regard.
4. The WCED intends training principals as electoral officers once again, to ensure the smooth running of the electoral process and to enable them to handle the elections succesfully. Training will commence on 10 March 2003. The  training program  will be made available in due course.
5. The amended Measures, published in Provincial Gazette Extraodinary no. 5946 dated 31 January 2003 have been provided to schools under cover of cirular 24/2003. Principals are requested to bring these Measures as well as the amended Manual for the election of Governing Bodies with them to the training sessions.
6. The Western Cape Education Department wishes to thank present members of governing bodies for the unselfish service that they have rendered in the interest of education.
