1. In pursuance of  Circular 7/2003 of 16 January 2003  your attention is drawn specifically to Sections 2 and 8 of the Amendment Act, 2002 (Act 50/2002)  (copy attached)  according to which the admission age of learners to public and independent schools was revised with effect from 1 January 2004.
2. From 1 January 2004 a learner may be admitted to Grade 1 or Grade R if such a learner reaches the age of 6 years (Grade 1) or 5 years (Grade R) by 30 June of the year of admission.
3. Criteria and procedures for the admission to public or independent schools at an age lower than the admission age are being developed and will be announced in due course.
4. Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all personnel, governing body members and parents attached to your school.
