1. The promotion of a sense of co-ownership of schools by communities is of paramount importance if the vandalising of school buildings is to be eradicated. The vast sums of money spent annually on repairing these buildings, could then be used to decrease the backlog in the maintenance of school infrastructure. Although school buildings are owned by the State, they are community facilities and community involvement in schools’ initiatives could therefore contribute to the curtailment of these acts of vandalism.
2. In an attempt to ensure the consistent and uniform handling of cases of vandalism by heads of educational institutions, a set of guidelines is provided in the enclosed Vandalism Guideline Document.
3. The efforts made by many schools, governing bodies, and communities to prevent the wilful and senseless destruction of school property are greatly appreciated.
